Southwest Airlines Adds Nonstop Flights in Key Cities
Southwest Airlines today announced it will increase its daily schedule by 18 departures on July 6, and by 18 more departures on Aug. 5 as a result of new 737-700 aircraft deliveries. The new flights are concentrated in Southwest's key jump-off markets such as Nashville, Baltimore/Washington, Kansas City, and Houston-Hobby. The additional flights afford Customers even greater mobility within the Southwest Airlines system.
Starting July 6, 1998, Southwest Airlines will add a brand-new nonstop flight between Nashville and San Diego and a new nonstop between Kansas City and Providence. Additional daily nonstop service includes a flight between Nashville and Houston-Hobby, for a total of seven in the market; one nonstop between Nashville and Kansas City, for a total of four; one nonstop between Nashville and New Orleans, for a total of three; one nonstop between Baltimore/Washington and Kansas City, for a total of two; one nonstop between Baltimore/Washington and Nashville, for a total of eight; one nonstop between Kansas City and Los Angeles, for a total of four; and one nonstop between Kansas City and Oakland, for a total of two.
The July 6 schedule additions also create convenient one-stop service: a one-stop flight between Baltimore/Washington and Oakland (for two daily), Baltimore/Washington and San Diego (one daily), Providence and Los Angeles (one daily), and from Providence to New Orleans (one daily).
As of Aug. 5, 1998, Southwest Airlines will add one daily nonstop flight between Baltimore/Washington and Jacksonville, for a total of three in the market; Baltimore/Washington and Providence, for a total of 10; Baltimore/Washington and Tampa, for a total of three; Baltimore/Washington and Birmingham, for a total of three; one nonstop between Birmingham and Houston-Hobby, for a total of two; one nonstop between Houston-Hobby and Las Vegas, for a total of three; one nonstop between Las Vegas and Sacramento, for a total of six; one nonstop between Nashville and Los Angeles, for a total of three; and one nonstop between Nashville and Tampa, for a total of four.
The Aug. 5 schedule additions also create convenient one-stop service: a daily one-stop flight between Birmingham and Las Vegas (one daily), Birmingham and Providence (one daily), Baltimore/Washington and Houston-Hobby (for a total of four daily), Houston-Hobby and Sacramento (one daily), and between Providence and Tampa (up to two daily).
"The deliveries of our new 737-700s are coming at a time when our Customers are demanding flights that will take them a little further than the average 50 minute Southwest Airlines segment," said Joyce Rogge, Southwest's vice president of marketing. "Nashville to San Diego and Kansas City to Providence truly demonstrate that phenomena. The remaining service we will add over the next few months allows our Customers to fly from coast to coast with only one stop or a simple change of planes."
All flights listed are available for roundtrip travel and are currently available for sale.
Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV), the fifth largest domestic carrier in terms of Customers boarded, currently serves 51 cities in 25 states. That number will increase when Southwest starts service to Manchester, NH on June 7, 1998. Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than 2,300 flights a day with a fleet of 266 Boeing 737s with an average age of 8.4 years--one of the youngest pure jet fleets in the domestic airline industry.
