Southwest Airlines Reports May Traffic Up 15.3 Percent

Southwest Airlines Co. announced today that the Company flew 2,743.0 million revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in May 1998, a 15.3 percent increase over the 2,378.3 million flown in May 1997. Available seat miles (ASMs) increased 6.4 percent to 3,935.6 million from the May 1997 level of 3,700.6 million. The load factor for the month was 69.7 percent, up 5.4 points from 1997.

For the first five months of 1998, Southwest flew 12,271.4 million RPMs, compared with the 11,096.5 million recorded for the same period of 1997, an increase of 10.6 percent. Available seat miles increased 7.0 percent to 19,057.8 million from the 1997 level of 17,812.5 million. The year-to-date load factor was 64.4 percent, up 2.1 points from the same period last year.
